Outfit Ideas: First Date, Summer Casual

Summer is finally, officially here, on this side of the globe, and it’s time for all those cute summer romances to begin, so here’s an outfit post for a casual first date, or maybe something for those of you relationship long timers, or even if you’re single and going out with the girls for the night. It’s pretty much an outfit idea you can use repeatedly for different occassions where you look casual and cool and little more dolled up than the everyday. It’s even something I would wear to the office! So let’s get started.

Every outfit should have a piece that starts as it’s foundation. Usually you’ll be tempted to pick a top which stands out from every thing else and call that the base for your outfit, but for this, I’m going to start from the bottom up.

For this look, I like to start out with a nice dark denim jean, preferably with no signs of distress and I roll the bottoms of the legs into cuffs as high as I can roll them, which is usually mid calf. Or you can buy something like these Cuffed Premium Denim Skinnies from Forever 21. Skinnies are great at showing off your legs and rolling those cuffs shows a little bit of skin which adds a bit of sex appeal. This look is for a first date. We’re not trying to give away all the goodies, but a little teasing can go a long way, which is why I prefer pants over a dress for a first date.

Now that we have a foundation, we can start building on top of it. It’s summer, so remember what kind of weather it is when choosing a top. Long sleeves are going to be out of the question unless you really want to throw off the vibe of your whole night. Short sleeves are ok, but I really love this look with a sleeveless blouse.

I love the way sheer fabric looks, especially in a peachy tone. Find a light colored, flowy camisole top to pair with dark jeans. It will balance out the heaviness of the dark bottoms and give it more of a dressy summer feel, all whilst keeping the look super casual. I adore this Cascade Ruffle Cami from Forever 21 for this look.

Now for shoes. I feel shoes are crucial to finishing this look off. If you can’t walk in heels already, learn. Just kidding, I won’t force you to wear anything you’re not comfortable with, but I feel like the shoes are really what makes this look irresistibly sexy. You could alway wear a cute sandal or gladiator, or even a cute cork wedge but heels really finish this look off.

The picture doesn’t do these shoes justice, but these Bambi heels from Kate Preston are to die for. It’s a cream lacey mesh with ruffles which makes your feet look just incredible. I own this pair and my friends all tried them on as well and they make anyone look great. I can’t find them online anywhere, but they are currently available in stores at Off Broadway Shoes.

And then I like to finish this look off with a very simple accessory like this Chrysoprase Stone Pendant from Evie Jewelry Designs on Etsy.

I hope you all enjoy this look and let me know if there’s any special occassions you’d like to see an outfit idea for!

PS: This is a fitting repost considering this outfit was based off of what I wore on my first date with my partner and our anniversary is tomorrow. Hehe

Bag Envy

So my style has two sides that it flips between. There’s the super girly side: dresses, tights and heels, which I think this blog has seen more of from me than the other. The second side is a little more hardcore, a little grungier, and a lot more rock ‘n’ roll. The past few weeks I’ve been feeling that rocker side more than not which has me pulling out combat boots, men’s tees, skinny jeans and grungy satchels.

About a week and a half ago, I came across a post on Tumblr of the most amazing leather satchel I’ve ever come across. This thing is incredible. I would honestly give my left leg to have it (you already know this if you follow me on Twitter).

So this is a blog post dedicated to this bag. If anyone knows where to find it, please link me to it because I’m hunting so hard to find it.

Now I feel like this post wouldn’t be complete with just me whining about how badly I want this bag, so I thought I’d throw in an outfit idea post (slightly inspired by the Hunger Games) as well with things you could pair well with this, since it is such a uniquely different accessory.

For starters, this is not going to be a girly look. It’s going to be rough. It’s going to be dirty. And pretty much if you wore this all together, you’d be ready to kick some major booty.

So to cover your rockin’ booty, I’m styling this bag with a pair of distressed skinnies from Forever 21. In my mind, it HAS to be a pair of skinnies. Anything flared would just get in the way of all those sweet high kicks you’ll be doing.

Keepin’ the top super simple with a racerback tank also from Forever 21. We’re too cool for sleeves.

Pair that simple outfit with some sick military boots from Cathy Jean and you’ve got a pretty sweet dealio going on for ya. I actually own these boots and they’re amazing. So comfy, and great with skinnies, or even a summer dress.

Top off the look (of course this is hair!) with a simple messy side braid and you’re pretty much ready to go fight crime or travel the world on some sick adventure.

Go rock it.

Outfit Ideas: Art Gallery Opening/Reception

I have a lot of friends ask me what to wear when I invite them to one of my gallery exhibition openings. I usually respond with “something not too formal, but so you don’t look like you’ve just left the gym.” Gallery openings are a great place to mingle in the art community and network yourself as an artist (or whatever you may be), and I think that your outfit should reflect how you want to be seen.

For my upcoming exhibition, Click, I want to wear something that makes me look dressier than my everyday style, and something that makes me stand out from the crowd. As an artist with hundreds of people flowing in and out of the gallery, you want to stand out from the everyday joes with something that says, “Hey! Look at me! I’m the artist!”

For my reception, here’s a similar look as to what I’ll be wearing:

Vibrant Button Blazer from Forever 21

Structured Silhouette Dress from Forever 21

Showered In Compliments Wedge in Sunrays from ModCloth

This is not the shoe I’m wearing at the reception but I love the golden yellow with the teal of the blazer.

Now, if you’re not an artist looking for an outfit for your big night, but you’re just attending an art show, here’s a much more casual look which is more along the lines of a night out. You won’t look overdressed, just more like you decided to stop by on an evening out on the town.

California Twirl Top from ModCloth

Classic Slim Denim Pants from Forever 21

Ponte Boyfriend Blazer from Top Shop

Serenade High Peep Toe Platforms from Top Shop

This look keeps it real simple. Classic denim jeans paired with a simple, cute, patterned top, which is mostly covered by a light, neutral blazer. Nothing too bold or flashy, but allowing a pop of color to be worn with these heels. It’s elegant, and can be worn for many different occasions.

Tribal Prints and Lanikais

It’s a ukulele kind of day. Back in high school I taught myself guitar. As I got older and a little more quirky with my style (fashion and music) I decided to pick up the ukulele. I started with a cheap little Rogue uke which never stayed in tune, but the bright little melodies which it created convinced me to invest a good deal of my savings into my beautiful baby, my Lanikai.

Some days you have nowhere to go but it just feels good to get dolled up. That’s today. No school, no meetings, no errands. Just my Lanikai and this cute little dress.

And for those wondering, I got my Lanikai from Musician’s Friend.

Sailor Stripes and Combat Boots

So finally an OOTD! I’m not a total flake after all! So I’m doing some modeling for my friend Kelly today so I put on a nice pair of high waisted buttoned jeans and a striped shirt both from Forever 21. I paired them with some black combat boots which I got last year on clearance at Payless, which is funny because my work started selling a dupe of them a few months later! Ha!
My makeup I kept simple, foundation, a brown/purple smokey eye and winged liner for the pin up in me.
Jewelry wise, I’ve got my 6g tunnels and this gem of a necklace from Mod Cloth:

Oh and don’t let me forget my new nose ring! Finally got that sucker changed!
Anchors ahoy!
